Vision and values

The Carbon Champions vision is simple: to create the world’s first carbon net zero national sport.  We’re focusing on cricket so this means making all 6,500 recreational cricket clubs in England & Wales carbon net zero by 2030.  To do that, carbon emissions will be reduced by 90% of current levels, the remaining 10% offset in perpetuity.

Our values are to be disruptive, action-focused, technology-driven and research-led. This means working at grassroots / local community level and providing services that embed in existing practice. It’s got to be fun, voluntary, informal, free, easy, local, credible, ubiquitous and unavoidable. But most of all fun.

Our strategy is to flip the current iterative approach based on emissions from previous years, to project the future required and work backwards.  We provide every club with their individual 10-year carbon reduction plan, then help them deliver it.  We’ll use technology to make it easy and quick; build community to make it voluntary and fun.

Footnote: As the project is progressing, we’re applying our ideas to sports, business and other communities interested in what we are trying to achieve.
