Why don’t companies use interns?

One of the things that always surprise me is why companies don’t make better use of bright young people.  An especially useful vehicle for this is summer internships where you can pick up undergraduates keen to impress for the minimum wage or less.  Switched-on universities actually subsidise placements to improve their students’ employability ratings as part of the ratings battles they now have to take part in.

That’s what we’ve used and have had two fantastic helpers this summer from UEA who oversaw the selection process too.  If anyone can’t make good use of this calibre of person in short, sharp summer projects at £3 an hour probably they shouldn’t be in business anyway.
