Our 2021 Carbon Centurions project aimed to help 100 clubs become carbon neutral in 100 days.  We didn’t quite succeed but got some fantastic publicity to raise awareness (see BBC video here). We also learnt a lot of useful lessons, many of which are being included in our Carbon Champions project.

The first lesson is that the people running cricket clubs are often too busy with paying bills, cutting outfields and finding players for Saturday, to address important but not urgent tasks like fighting climate change.  So we focus on recruiting young people instead.

The second lesson is that measuring needs to be more frequent and more automated to allow accurate calculations at a weekly game level.  So we wrote a community carbon calculator that does this automatically, and in three dimensions.

And the Carbon Centurions march on! The Groups feature in the Fun section allows the eleven clubs involved to keep in touch and share good ideas on their way to carbon net zero. Once fully trained, any carbon champion can create their own group to encourage ownership and social influence.
