What is Carbon Balancing?

Claydon Court has been carbon neutral for over a decade, so it was surprising to be asked by a tenant recently what ‘Carbon Balanced’ means.  It’s a term that’s used differently and often pejoratively given the catastrophe that is carbon credits i.e. exporting pollution.

To us, Carbon Balancing or carbon offsetting mean the same thing i.e. taking action to mitigate residual carbon emissions.  There are increasing numbers of ways of doing this, but usually involves protecting existing environments or creating new ones.

It’s important that Carbon Balancing has credibility. We use World Land Trust as they provide the maximum eco-diversity by balancing carbon where it matters most.
